Profit and Loss

QUOTE: “Rational Self Interest? You can rationalize anything if you don't think outside making a profit.”

Rational self-interest is all about thinking of how to make a profit. In order to live we must pursue values, food, water, shelter. If you offer your services to an employer, you accept the job because your time and talent is worth less than what you’re going to be paid – you expect to profit. If you’re an employer, you hire someone because their time and talent is worth more than you’re going to pay them – you expect to profit. It’s a win-win trade – both parties expect to profit.

The author of this quote seems to have a narrow view of profit. They seem to think that profit applies only to making money. There’s a lot more to life than making money. If you find a new friend do you profit by it or do you suffer a loss? If you find a career that you love is your love for it a profit or a loss? In our pursuit of values - a productive, fun-filled career, family, friends, art, romantic love - we are seeking to profit - profit is in our rational self-interest.
