ISAAC NEWTON AND YOU
The 16th century Age of Science had a profound effect on the nature of man – because it had a profound effect on man’s view of nature.
Not since the First Agricultural Revolution, man’s transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture and settlement, has there been such a far-reaching change in man’s lifestyle.
Prior to the Age of Science the common man was an ignorant, illiterate, superstitious being guided by mystic revelations.
Thanks to men like Galileo and Newton, developments in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology and chemistry transformed man’s view of nature. This was made possible by use of The Scientific Method, which starts with observation. These men made observations, looked for facts, integrated those facts, drew logical conclusions, resolved contradictions – I.E. Used Reason.
Philosophers and scientists of the period widely circulated their ideas through meetings at scientific academies, lodges, literary salons, coffeehouses and in printed books, journals, and pamphlets. And the common man became a man of reason - he put reason above all else. He understood that to think or not to think was the province of the individual. He could learn from others, but the choice to think was his and his alone.
This new common man took pride in his ability to think, took pride in his ability to grasp reality and what it could be made to do, took pride in his new found productive capacity in pursuit of his values. He was a virtuous man – rational, productive and honest – he wanted to earn his values, wanted to earn his self-esteem - and wanted to be unencumbered in his pursuit of his values – he wanted freedom.
Men like Isaac Newton had a profound effect on science, and a profound effect on you and me, and we are beholden to them - but what were the antecedents that made Isaac Newton possible?
Click on the link (a 3 minute read), and discover the man we are more beholden to than any other in world history.
