EDUCATION

There are ten widgets in a bag, six bags in a box, twelve boxes in a case and we have two cases. How many widgets do we have? This is simple math and a necessary skill for any stock boy. This particular stock boy, using a calculator, keyed in ten, plus ten, plus ten, plus ten, plus ten, plus ten. Incredibly, this man had no understanding of multiplication. He was also responsible for picking orders. The pick slip generated the product code number, the description and the price. The tag above the product listed the same three pieces of information. Apparently he could not trust the evidence of his own eyes, and would constantly ask a co-worker to confirm his selection. And here’s the kicker – he was a high-school graduate. Is that an education? No, it’s a horrific injustice against the high-school graduate, and it’s fraud perpetrated on any employer that hirers him on the strength of a high-school diploma.
And there’s more. I’ve said to a coworker, it’s windy outside; her answer, the trees are blowing around if that means anything – if that means anything?! And another, you seem to hum a lot; the answer, it keeps me from thinking. And on and on.
If you’re not educating, you’re indoctrinating. Indoctrination is a huge problem in our schools, but what they don’t teach is a bigger problem - the link between metaphysics and epistemology.
Your senses, your ability to see, hear, smell, taste and feel provide you with the raw data about reality; they provide the link between reality and your mind. You have the capacity to think, to integrate that data, draw logical conclusions, resolve contradictions – that’s using the virtue of rationality. All other virtues are derived from rationality. It is our rational faculty that allows us to identify, choose and prioritize values. It allows us to identify the nature and source of our feelings and emotions, to judge our own character and that of others, making love possible. It is the source of freedom, justice and the rule of law. Rationality is the source of all things good – that’s what our children should be taught – put nothing above reason.

I intend to send this post to every MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament) in Ontario. I want them to know what most everybody else knows – our public school system is one of indoctrination, not education.
And organizations that purport to represent the interests of business, such as The Canadian Federation of Independent Business and the Chamber of Commerce. While the high-school student does not have the resources to sue the government for the injustice done to him, you do, and should initiate a class action lawsuit on behalf of businesses that have been defrauded.
And to radio talk show hosts, and any other influencers.

If you care about our children’s future, you should do the same.
